Pulp logs were delivered to Harmac Pacific pulp mill near Nanaimo that would have normally been considered uneconomical from timber tenures in the Terrace area. The Coast Mountains Fibre Utilization Project aimed to increase fibre utilization and reduce CO2 emissions by the extraction and utilization of decadent pulp fibre. The fibre was beyond the current economic circle and would otherwise have been left to waste and be burned in slash piles. The project was a collaborative effort on the part of Kalum Ventures Limited, Kitselas Forestry Limited Partnership, and Skeena Sawmills – all timber tenures holders in the Coast Mountains Natural Resource District. With the additional support of a key pulp producer on the BC Coast (Harmac Pacific), this ensured the efficient and economic delivery of the project from
harvest to final product. The avoidance of pile burning resulted in fewer greenhouse gas emissions and contributed to the achievement of B.C.'s and Canada's climate change targets.
