May Creek Wildfire Risk Reduction and Habitat Improvement Treatment

Project Number: #WR0000700

This project was a collaboration between the West Boundary Community Forest (WBCF) and the Forest Enhancement Society of BC (FESBC), with support from the Osoyoos Indian Band, and was focused on the South Area/Kootenay Boundary Region/Selkirk District/Boundary Timber Supply Area, three kilometres west of Grand Forks. The project aim was on reducing excessive fuel loads to mitigate catastrophic wildfire risks and to help mitigate mid-term timber supply shortfalls by facilitating access to marginal stands. Dead and dry pine were converted into bio-energy and wildlife habitat was improved through project activity. Future air quality improvements will be realized by managing emissions related to prescribed fire treatments, as opposed to emissions resulting from a wildfire.
