Anahim Lake Fuel Break – Phase 1

Project Number: #WR0000628

This was the first phase of a two part project to protect the communities of Anahim Lake and Nimpo Lake. This first phase identified the priority areas where a landscape level break would assist in wildfire protection. West Fraser Mills Ltd. undertook this project with local First Nations and engaged with the BC Wildfire Service to determine appropriate treatment locations. The mapping and permitting phases were completed and obtained full support from the Ministry. West Fraser Mills did not receive any fibre from this project and undertook it for the relationship with local communities. Contracts for thinning were implemented with initially selective thinning and shaded fuel breaks being the desired outcome. The project's remoteness and limited contractor resources contributed to revisions to the plan which were then implemented in Phase 2 of the project.
