The goal of this project was to enhance and accelerate successful growth of cedar on Haida Gwaii, which is particularly difficult to reestablish because of deer browse. Once the height of the cedar was above browse height it was important to ensure trees are successful in being dominant or co-dominant in the new forest. Hand fertilization of individual stems gave the tree the boost it needed to establish itself within the canopy of the new stand which helped meet the Haida Nation’s objective to have cedar for present and future generations of Haida.
Individual tree fertilization of cedar also enhanced carbon sequestration and the success of future old-growth forests.
